Geocities, one of the earliest Internet website communities, was a fertile ground for gifs whose original author remained unknown. The Internet Archive's repositories, through gifcities, are a great way to find them. I have compiled here an ecosystem of sorts, of all kinds of nature gifs (not made by me, unlike the birds above)! These things seemed to be reused by everyone, without the notion of copyright.
